Built-in the 19th century, Qettanine fondouk which means “cotton merchant”, was used as a warehouse for luxury fabrics and other goods imported from France and England. Both a hotel for traders and a place for storing goods, this building is one of the largest fondouks in the Medina of Fez. One of the main elements of the Nejjarine architectural complex, Nejjarine fondouk is distinguished by the brilliance of its exterior and interior facades, magnificently engraved and sculpted, as seen in the arcades, muciarnas (honeycomb vaulting), geometric motifs, and cursive calligraphy. This magnificently restored 18th-century fondouk is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 14th century, it is one of the oldest shopping centers in Fez, contemporary with the Attarine madrasa. This caravanserai was reserved for merchants from Tetouan, hence its name. The main importers of silk fabrics manufactured in Lyon and Manchester, these traders owned retail stores in Qissariat Al Kifah, which is located near the fondouk.
